Principal Publicly Shames Teen Girls Bigger Than Size 2, Has No Idea She’s Being Recorded

Body shaming is unacceptable in any and all situations, but especially when it involves easily influenced teenage girls. One high school principal in South Carolina has come under fire for something inflammatory she said to the teenage girls in her school regarding their weight and clothing style.

Heather Taylor is the principal at Stratford High School. She was overheard in a 9th and 10th grade assembly ridiculing girls who aren’t skinny and wear leggings that make them “look fat.” Her comment was made in front of the students. The recording was later shared with WCBD News.

“I’ve told you this before, I’m going to tell you this now, unless you are a size zero or two and you wear something like that, even though you’re not fat, you look fat.”

Allison Veazey, a student at Stratford High School, was really upset when she heard that comment. Allison admits she isn’t a size zero or size two but still likes to wear leggings per the school’s dress code. She told WCBD:

“It was really hurtful, cause I felt like my size made me look disgusting towards someone in the clothes that I wear. I wear leggings outside of school and I wear leggings when I go and hang out with my friends, and to think that someone would think that I look like a stuffed sausage — that was kind of hurtful.”

One person posted on the school’s Facebook community page that it is disappointing, disgusting and disheartening that such a comment would be made to:

“…impressionable young women and men by someone they should be able to look up to…”

Mom Lacy Thompson-Harper, who has an 11th grade student, posted on Facebook about the incident. She and her daughter both were quite angry. It prompted her to confront the principal, too.

“Body shaming teenage girls is uncalled for, inappropriate and unprofessional. When I spoke with her, she talked around the issue, and made excuse after excuse, effectively calling all of the students liars. This has upset many, many more students than just those in the 10th grade. My daughter is in the 11th grade, and is livid. She has been ridiculed by students for her body, and shouldn’t be subjected to it from teachers.”

According to TODAY, the principal released a statement after her comments came to light that she didn’t intend to “hurt or offend” her students. She met with students in each grade to address the situation, she said.

“I … shared from my heart that my intention was not to hurt or offend any of my students in any way. I assured them all that I am one of their biggest fans and invested in their success. After speaking with our students and receiving their support, I am confident that, together, we are ready to move forward and have a wonderful year.”

While the principal may feel like the situation has been put to rest, parents are still infuriated about her comments. Not all students accepted her apology either.

In fact, the comment she made and subsequent fallout has gone viral and caught national attention. Do you agree with the principal? Or do you think her comment was completely inappropriate?
